John X. Jamrich

President of NMU from 1968 to 1983

John X. Jamrich was the President of Northern Michigan University from 1968 to 1983. At the beginning of his Presidency, he resolved the McClellan controversy by settling the matter out of court and reinstating McClellan.

His tenure in office saw protests over the Vietnam War, protests over the closure of the Job Corps, and sit-ins at a basketball game and in a dean’s office. Though some felt that he opposed and tried to shut down the protests, Jamrich maintained that he always had the welfare of the students, including those protesting, foremost in his mind and that he supported students and faculty having a greater say in university matters.
