John McGoff
John McGoff was the president of the Mid-States Broadcasting Corporation and the owner of the Panax newspaper chain. He became a member of Northern’s first Board of Control in 1964 and resigned from the board in 1972. McGoff was a controversial figure whose involvement with publishing in South Africa in the 1970s created a campus controversy. This became heated when in 1979 he gave $300,000 for the McGoff Distinguished Lecture Series. Students and some faculty kept up a running struggle with McGoff over the years. In 1988, McGoff took the money back and the series ended. He and his wife donated the Carillons which were dedicated on August 8, 1980.
